Before the 1920s, wearing black was reserved only for mourning. At the time, women’s fashion was all about tight corsets and huge gowns. But it took a turn when Coco Chanel printed a simple black dress on the cover of Vogue magazine in 1926. It was Chanel’s genius idea to offer a design that was affordable and boasting that those who were not wealthy could: “walk around like millionaires.” It remained popular during the 1930s Great Depression because of its simplicity and flexibility – it hugged the contours of the body like a canvas that could easily be accessorized.
